Rosemaling is an old and dear art form to Norwegians, and rosemaling antiques are often passed down through the generations. Unfortunately, time and weather can take a toll on these herilooms. When people come to me with such items, I study the traces left of the original work, and try to identify the techinques and intent of the artist.
I work with the traces of old paint, integrating them into the restored coating, rather than painting on top of the old layer. Restoring the work reveals the original tradition in detail. Restoration has taught me a lot about rosemaling!
